Sparta is a city in and the county seat of Monroe County along the La Crosse River. The population was 10,025 at the 2020 census.
Sparta is the home and international headquarters of several businesses, including Century Foods International, Northern Engraving Corp., Spartek Inc, Mathews Inc., F.A.S.T. Fiberglass, McPherson Guitars, Multistack,and Wesco Home Furnishings.
Tomah is also a city in Monroe County. The population was 9,570 as of the 2020 census. The city is surrounded by the Town of Tomah and the Town of La Grange.
Fort McCoy is a United States Army installation on 60,000 acres (24,000 ha) between Sparta and Tomah, Wisconsin, in Monroe County. In 1909, there were two separate camps named Camp Emory Upton and Camp Robinson; in 1926, these camps were joined together to form Camp McCoy. Since its creation in 1909, the post has been used primarily as a military training center. A part of Fort McCoy is also used by the Wisconsin State Patrol as a training facility.
